Physical Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

Do you get the required eight hours of sleep each night our bodies need.   We all could answer  no.  Truth be known if we do not get our rest physical effects of sleep deprivation can take a toll on our bodies over time.

A person can be become mentally and physically exhausted.  The effects will not only be on the inside but the effects will show on the outside physically and mentally.  All of your energy will be spent just trying to complete the smallest of tasks.

There could be a sense of discomfort within your body.  No matter what you do the feeling that is felt does not go away and energy is felt liked it is zapped from you.

A person may experience temporary periods of blurred vision.  If a proper amount of sleep is not gotten sleep deprivation can affect your vision short periods because our eyes rest when we sleep.

Your hand-eye coordination can be affected by sleep deprivation.  The reaction time can be lowered.  A feeling of slowing down can occur and can make one feel like they are moving in slow motion.

Studies have shown that some 47 million adults do not get the proper amount of sleep our bodies need.  Our bodies need to rest and get regenerated for our busy lives  we all live in

Short term physical effects of sleep deprivation include the droopy eyes, weakness and become irritable due to the lack of sleep.  These effects can be very dangerous especially if one is driving a car:

  • Solving problems or making quick decisions
  • Having hallucinations
  • Reaction times are slowed down
  • Can become disoriented
  • Could possible fall asleep
  • Tremors can happen

Also by not getting the proper rest our bodies are unable to produce white cells and ones immune system can come under attack and can cause serious health issues.

Some long term physical effects of sleep deprivation can be obesity because the body does not produce the hormone leptin.  Leptin is what makes a person feel full and then triggers the need to stop eating.  If  leptin is not produced it can cause a person to be overweight because they eat and eat  and not really get full even though they are in reality are.

We all need our sleep.  If we do not get our rest and enough of sleep effects can happen.  Some people can function on less sleep than others.  The warning signs of the physical effects of sleep deprivation should not be ignored.  Getting  the proper amount of sleep our bodies crave so we can feel rested and ready to face each and every day is very important.  REST! REST!

Narcolepsy Causes And Symptoms

Do you suffer or know someone who suffers from Narcolepsy?   Narcolepsy is a sleeping disorder that can cause excessive sleep and frequent daytime sleeping attacks.

What the exact causes of Narcolepsy is unknown because it is a nervous system disorder.  Narcolepsy has been linked to a protein called hypocretin which our brains produce. If not enough of hypocretin is not produced by our brains Narcolepsy can occur. Narcolepsy is genetic and  certain genes are associated with Narcolepsy.

Symptoms of Narcolepsy tend to occur in people ranging in ages from 15 to 30.  Listed below are some of the more common symptoms of Narcolepsy:

  • Extreme drowsiness periods can occur- you feel the urge to sleep and short “nap attacks” occur.  These naps tend to last about 15 minutes and can happen while you are driving, or after you have eaten, or just while you are talking to someone.  When you awake from these “sleep naps” you often feel refreshed.
  • Dream like hallucinations occur between sleep and when you wake up.
  • May experience sleep paralysis
  • Cataplexy – which is a sudden loss of muscle tone and makes you unable to move for a brief time – These can last for 30 seconds. You possibly can fall and be injured if this symptom occurs.

A series of tests can be performed by a physician to check for excessive sleepiness like:

    Web Directories

  • Insomnia and other sleeping disorders
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Seizures
  • Sleep apnea
  • Many other medical, psychiatric and other nervous system diseases to determine if you  have Narcolepsy.

There is no known cure for Narcolepsy but things can be done to help control the symptoms.  Avoid eating heavy meals and eat light or vegetarian meals during the day.  If  possible plan your naps like after you have eaten to help avoid the “sleep attack naps”.  It is a good idea to let people you know at work or school about your condition so you want be targeted as “lazy” or just falling asleep.

Some medications can be taken to help you stay awake but as always check with a physician to see which medications are right for you.

Some driving restrictions are placed on people with suffer from Narcolepsy because of the dangers of having a “sleep attack” while driving. Even though there are no known cures for Narcolepsy successful treatments can help prevent the number of attacks a person can have.  Avoid situations that can aggravate the condition.

As with any disease or sleeping disorder it is a good idea to be checked by a doctor and follow the treatments they describe and taking the medication as how prescribed is very important and a key to having an successful treatment. Control your life and do not let a disease control you.

Fibromyalgia is so complex it can be difficult to diagnose.

Your nerves with Firbromyalgia are overactive and that can explain why there is so much chronic pain and tenderness in a persons body.

What are some symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

Along with the chronic pain and tenderness one may have these pain symptoms as well:

  • Deep muscle pain and soreness
  • Stiffness in the morning

Dry Skin

Did you know that having dry skin is extremely common?  The number is close to 100 million people whose skin is dried out and itchy.  If you skin gets dried out and cracked,  you could be letting your skin be attacked by bacteria.  Dry skin may not be just a sign of a skin condition or disease, but can be simply be the use of harsh soaps, itchy clothing or even taking a too hot of a shower.

What can cause dry skin xerosis?  It can be something in the environment or even something that you are doing or have done to your skin.  Dry skin is often felt more than seen, but it is can be noticeable and can be very embarrassing.

Dry skin can be treated because most causes of are external  and medicines are made for external.  If a moisturizer is being used one should apply to the skin when the skin is wet or damp, that way the moisturizer is trapping the moisture still on your skin. Use it after a shower or just damping a wet towel onto the skin is sufficient.

During the winter months dry air is the most common cause of dry skin.  They dry air draws the moisture right out of our skin.  Moisturizing can help as well as turning down the thermostat in our homes in the winter.

Prolonged hot water showers or baths can wash away the natural oils that protect our skin.  Limiting shower time and using lukewarm water as opposed to hot water is good for your dry skin and apply the moisturizer after the shower or bath.

People who suffer from dry skin should chose a soap that is milder and “fragrance-free” soaps.  A  mild skin cleanser rather than soap is also good for the treatment of dry skin.

Have you ever wore a piece of clothing that made you itch?  Even though you may love the sweater or shirt it will always itch you no matter how many times you wear it.  Itchy clothes can make your dry skin condition even worse. Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothes and also consider using detergents without perfumes or dyes.

Some types of  medicines can make your skin itch.  If the itches continue you need to consult your doctor about the medications.

Dry skin can also cause certain medical conditions like:

  • Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis
  • Diabetes
  • Hypothroidism
  • Malnutrition

As stated before millions of people suffer from dry skin.  There are treatments that are available for dry skin so check with your doctor to see if there is a treatment  for your dry skin condition.  Why suffer with the itch of dry skin and the discomfort of dry skin when a treatment can be just a visit away to your doctor.

Relieve Tension By Using Acupressure

Are you living with a lot of stress and finding no relief?  Stress can take all of our energy and effect the quality of our lives.  A solution my be to relieve tension by using acupressure and gain back control of your life.   Stress can make things worse than they really are.  Acupressure points can resolve hundreds of stress syndromes- a problem that we all deal with on a daily basis.

What is acupressure and how does it work?  Acupressure therapy was developed in Ancient China over 5000 years ago.  They discovered that there are energy pathways that go all over our bodies which are called meridians.  Acupressure uses the power and sensitivity of our hands instead of needles like acupuncture, and is effective in relieving  stress related ailments, self treated and in preventive health care.

Acupressure points uses the fingers and various parts of the body to press key pressure points on the surface of the skin which stimulates the bodies own natural self-curative abilities.  When the trigger points are pressed, muscular tension is released and this promotes  better circulation of the blood and the body begins to heal itself.  Acupressure points are the most effective body spots to help relieve stress and tension.

Acupressure points and acupuncture points are the same except acupuncture uses needles and acupressure uses gentle but firm finger pressure to relieve the tension and stress.  Acupressure points will relieve pain, trauma and help a person with burnout.  This technique can be done by you at anytime or anyplace.

When our muscles are tensed, muscle fibers contract due to the secretion of lactic acid caused by fatigue, trauma, stress factors, chemical imbalances, or poor circulation of the blood.  When a acupressure point is held finger pressure releases the muscle tension, muscle fibers relax and the blood flows more freely.  As the blood and the bio electrical energy circulates, a greater sense of harmony, health and well being takes on and you can continue with your day without the tension that was once felt.   We feel better and want to do more to go out and enjoy life again pain free after relieving the pain from the acupressure points. It really works so give it a try today.

Water Is Important To Our Skin

Have you ever wondered about the benefits of drinking water?  Is is good to drink a lot of water or not?  Our bodies need an adequate amount of water on a daily basis because water helps us to maintain good health by aiding in our digestion, circulation, absorbing and even excreting. Drinking a lot of water is  important for our skin and body.

Did you know that our skin is an organ made up of cells?  Those cells are made up of water.  The organs would not function properly without an adequate amount of water.

Without water our skin can become dry, tight and flaky.  Dry skin can be prone to become wrinkled if the resilience in the skin is lost.

Most of  spend our days in a mild dehydration without even knowing it.  Water makes up about 60% of our body and we need water for survival.  We can go longer without food than we can water.

Drinking an adequate amount of water will enhance our health, increase our energy, help us to have brighter and clearer eyes and have a more radiant complexion.  Water is also good for our muscles.  Water helps maintain proper muscle tone and helps to prevent muscles cramps.  Water can help reduce the prevention of kidney stones.   Water can also be used to help lose weight because after all a zero calorie drink and is better for us than sodas and it helps elevate blotting.

Water also

  • carries nutrients to every cell in your body
  • flushes out nasty toxins
  • can improve circulation and blood flow
  • lubricates our joints

As discussed in this article we have learned that drinking an adequate amount of water is important to maintaining and keeping our bodies and skin healthy.  Whether you drink water all day or just part of the day it is important to supply our skin with the water that is lost on a daily basis.  Drink water and be healthy and your body and skin will thank you.  So drink up.

Light Therapy For The Elderly

It is no secret that sleep habits change as we get older.  Sleep is a problem for the elderly.   More than half of our seniors 65 or older suffer from some form of chronic sleep disturbances.  This is due to the fact that sleep disturbances often result from a disruption of the body’s circadian rhythms which are biological cycles that repeat every 24 hours.  The most effective way of stimulating the circadian system is  when blue lights are delivered directly to the eyes.  Light therapy can remedy early rising syndrome in the elderly by shifting the body clock to a normal nighttime sleeping schedule.

Light and dark pattens are the major synchronizer of  circadian rhythms to the twenty-four hour solar day.   Light stimulus travels through the retina, which is the light-sensitive nerve tissue lining the back wall of the eye.  Also a combination of age related changes in the eye and a more slow downed lifestyle can reduce the amount of light stimulus  reaching an older persons retina, which in turn reduces the amount of light for the circadian system.

A person with Alzheimer’s disease, the circadian system may require a stronger light stimulus due the deteriorating neural processes in the brain.  Muted signals to the circadian system can occur from these physical and neural changes.  Light therapy can help older people stay more alert during the day, as well as preventing the “night wandering” the inhibits the care of many elderly people with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.

A higher increase in daytime light levels can conteract the age dependent losses in retinal light exposure by providing a stronger signal to the circadian system.   The color and intensity of commercially available  lighting systems, like those used in senior residences, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes, are designed for only visual effectiveness and only minimal energy and not effective for generating light to stimulate an older circadian system.

Aging brings physiological changes to our eyes.  Changes in the lens and cornea cause increased glare from “Bright Light” therapy lamps.  Extensive exposures to the bright light therapy lamps, especially the blue wavelengths of light from these bright light or blue light therapy lamps increases the risk of  light – induce retinal damage and blindness in our population.  Hazards from these bright lights is added because most elderly people have some form of retinal damage.  Studies have shown that by the age of 75, more than one in every three people have vision problems form Age-Related Macular Degeneration or AMD and this number increases to over one half by the age of 85.

So why we are young or young or heart our eyes or important to us – take care of them we only have one set.
